The surface quality of an object that we sense through touch. All objects have a physical texture. Artists can convey texture visually in two dimensions.

The texture adds a whole visceral element to it since it focuses on the intricacies of the object.

There are many types of textures: marble, agate, embroidery, guilloche, holographic, grunge, and terrazzo.

I have failed to see the meaning of using a certain texture for an image. The use of color in any work of art can have a certain meaning to it. Using dominant warm colors in a color palette can convey the emotion of anger in an image. When it comes to texture, I can perhaps understand the use in paintings, or anything with a physical form of texture that can be felt. Using texture as an artistic intent is what I fail to understand.

The only use of texture as an artistic intent in a photograph that I understand, is film grain. In the modern day, film grain can sometimes be used in movies. In my opinion, the emotions/meaning grain can convey in a film is to give sense of a veil; a separation from reality. Watching a movie (modern movie shot with digital camera or even film) with film grain, gives me the sensation that I am watching a film (a work of fiction).

However, what I feel I have fully understood from the use of texture is to convey information. Emphasizing the texture of an object can be used to the convey the nature of its physicality. Is the product rough, soft, smooth…

Techniques and tips:

Attempts:

Picture of details of painting:

Canon 4000D - 18-55 lens

This is the most clear picture out of all my attempts. I used flashlight to have a very dominant source of light. The picture looks very sharp, the details are also clean. The difference between the materials in the painting can also be seen.

Picture of crack on wall:

Canon 4000D - 18-55 lens

My first attempt when trying to capture a sharp picture with intricate details. The details can be seen, however, there are other elements in this picture that take the focus out from the texture only (shape and lines are also dominant).

Picture of a painting:

This is another attempt on capturing the details of a painting. This is where the importance of focus comes when capturing details of texture. I missed the focus by a little the details turned out to be blurry.

Picture of Old Medina Wall:

Canon 4000D - 18-55 lens

F/8

This is an out door picture of a wall. The intent behind this picture is to capture the old details of the wall. This was achieved very well, even without a not so wide depth of field. The lighting used was that of natural light.
